From the history of Podskalí
The name Podskalí evolved from the cliff where the Church of SS Cosmas and Damian has been standing since the 12th century, and where the Emmaus convent and Church of St. John on the Cliff was established. In 1348, the ancient village under this name was included into the fortifications of the New City, founded by Charles IV.
Since ancient times, the main livelihood of the people of Podskalí was the trade of lumber, which was floated down the Vltava River. Customs duty, called "výtoň" was collected from the rafts floating into Prague at the mouth of the Botič Creek.
The Podskalí buildings were concentrated around two streets that were parallel to the river, connected by short perpendicular streets. The main artery was Podskalská Street, which unlike today led along the bank of the river. One side was bordered by bathing houses, the other side by lumberyards.
